We landed in Daniel K. Inouye International Airport after a nine and a half hour flight.
I have to say though that the plane food wasn’t too bad flying with Hawaiian Airlines. We had a chicken Caesar wrap, apple bag and a pineapple macadamia Honolulu cookie for a light after dinner snack and scrambled eggs, bacon, cherry tomato, potatoes, fruit salad and apple cinnamon cupcake for breakfast.
When we landed, we couldn’t wait to eat so we checked into our hotel at the Modern then headed out to Ala Moana shopping centre to see what was around.
We just went around to the food court and settled for Panda Express which is their local Chinese. This was good as I wanted to compare it to our Chinese food back home.
Two differences we noticed was that the pricing was a bit deceiving as they don’t add tax until you get to the counter and they called their regular/large with two choices a ‘bowl’.
We opted for rice, orange chicken and honey walnut shrimp.
So the verdict? Not as great as our food court Chinese back home. But they did do the duty of giving us a free fortune cookie! Plus the service was pretty good so I can’t complain.
We walked around the stores for around three hours and let me tell you that place is big! We didn’t even cover half of the stores before we were hungry for a snack. But first, coffee! So we stopped at Starbucks to see just how different the taste really was and unfortunately, we were quite disappointed as the beans tasted burnt.
Next stop, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels.
YasSss! I love this place lol. We had the Manager’s special of two for six dollars. I could have eaten more but thought I’d save room for dinner as we planned on going to the Cheesecake Factory.
Lucky I did stop at two because the portion sizes were huuuge! And I am talking huge. I didn’t even make a dent in my Huevos Rancheros. This was a black bean dish topped with crispy tortillas, eggs, spicy ranchero sauce, cheese, salsa, sour cream and avocado. Looking around while walking to our table, I really should have known!
Our friends ordered the smoke house BBQ burger with smoked bacon, melted cheese, crispy onion rings and BBQ ranch sauce.
The macaroni and cheese burger made with a veggie pattie, topped with cheddar cheese sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion.
Some quesadillas with kalua pork, melted cheese, green onion, chillies, guacamole, salsa and sour cream.
Spicy chipotle pasta with honey glazed chicken, asparagus, red and yellow peppers, peas, garlic and onion.
Buffalo wings stuffed in spiced wrappers, served with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing.
For drinks we had a pineapple mojito, mango rush and some rather large softdrinks.
For dessert (as I was in no way skipping it) I had the Adam’s peanut buttercup fudge ripple cheesecake which was swirled with caramel, peanut butter, butterfinger and Reese’s peanut butter cups.
Our friends ordered the white chocolate raspberry truffle cheesecake which was swirled with white chocolate and raspberry.
The Reese’s peanut buttercup chocolate cheesecake with layers of fudge cake and caramel.
So day one done and dusted, we’re ready for day two!
